OUR SAVOIR FAIRE
Gadfly is a Urban Dance repertory company and Choreography unit powered by passion. We Create Original Works , Produce Events, Teach Classes, and provide Choreography with balls, humility & a focus on the sweet spot between Art and Entertainment.
If you’re into labels, you can consider us a hybrid between a dance collective, a training organization, a production company, and a choreography factory for live stage, theatre, web, and film. These are just mediums though… specializing in mediums is blah. We simply enjoy creating EXPERIENCES that makes people feel something in their gut.
THE GADFLY STORY
FOUNDED ON A DATE, 1 CREDIT CARD, & MUTUAL TRUST
Before the productions, fancy venues, and sleepless nights of hard work, Gadfly first started as a simple Hip Hop dance crew called SayWhat in Montreal in 2001. It was founded by 2 dating teenagers, a Political Science Undergrad and a 3-time school drop-out (guess who is who), using a student credit card with a $500 limit, with the only motivation to not sit and wait for opportunities. But quickly, we got bored and started asking questions…
[gadfly] person who upsets the status quo by posing novel questions
Why is Street Dance so whoaaa but not seen at the same level as Ballet, Jazz, etc? Why is Dance so addictive but not seen at the same level as Film, or theatre? Who decided that performances that people see on stage or screen couldn’t be BOTH Artistic & Entertaining? Hmmm… How do you spell Choreographer?
Through the years, several great dancers (B-boys, Poppers, Ballerinas, Contemporary dancers, House Dancers, etc) jumped in to perform shows to grow the name Gadfly based on mutual trust and wanting to be challenged, treated as artists, and for once be put in the forefront. It’s only because of all these artists that trust us that Gadfly has grown expertise in Dance Creation, Production, and Training.
We are only interested in spreading what we stand for:
- Artistry: Have something to say, Take what you want, Mix it up, & Do it your way.
- Athleticism: Train, grow, or die
- Authenticity: Don’t preach diverse or multi-cultural, spread Realness.
