2017 has been a year of creation, learning and growing. We came, we saw, and we Gadflied. From Burlington to New York, Whitehorse to Montreal, we got to collaborate on amazing projects that pushed us above and beyond, we hired over 120 dancers for 45+ Gadfly performances and we created 11 new works (including 7 Commissions!). Here are some of our absolute favorites from 2017 – we might have to include a few honorable mentions because this years list is a doozy!!!

Really Big World
We got to Choreograph a tropical thing for a massive production at Really Big World! It was the most fun we’ve had in a hot minute. Nothing gives more life than Salsa music played LIVE by a 14 member band and a cast of Xena Warriors?! This dynamite show was produced by Anu Entertainment

A breathtaking new Apolonia piece (going straight into our Gadfly repertoire) commissioned by The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. The School of Toronto Dance Theatre is a top modern contemporary training program. The historic organization has been developing artists since 1968! Yep, that’s 50 YEARS!
With no lights, no wings, just the work and nature we toured a piece by Ofilio “Rawrabide” across Canada with Dusk Dances. This crazy raw festival has been around since 1993! It features choreographers from diverse backgrounds and brings them all together to perform in an open outdoor setting making it completely accessible to the community! Rawrabide is inspired by this quote from a 1970s lower class black homosexual, now considered Harlem renaissance, writer, and civil rights activist: “I was not born to be defined by someone else, but by myself, and myself only.” Life is a game. Lots of rules, flocks of players, and sloppy referees… The dancers move in staccato and speak with the bravado of urban realness, social activism, and remix culture.
Canadian contemporary dance theatre launched in 1980 and since then has hosted leading international choreographers, has one of Canada’s most diverse repertoire, and has staged over fifteen hundred performances all with dancers that are 19 and UNDER!
Choreography: Apolonia Velasquez
KUU KUU HARAJUKU
We flew all the way to the Yukon to perform this Hard hitting piece for CYPHERFEST. The urban nature of this event brought together artists of different backgrounds to combine art, sport and creating in a budding dance environment. We performed our piece ANOMYKZ.
